Coins left with an exchange, and coins you hold yourself

Self-custody and an exchange account are different kinds of holding. A Solana learning-library note on what changes when you move.

A quiet wooden service counter in a small library, with a ledger book closed and a chair pulled out.

An exchange account is an account with a company. You sign in, you ask the company to buy or sell, and the company keeps the customer record. Self-custody is a Solana wallet whose recovery phrase you hold. The two can sit side by side in one person's life. They are not the same object.

People leave coins on an exchange because the login is familiar, because a password reset exists, and because paper feels easy to lose. Those are serious reasons. A password reset does not exist for a phrase you have lost. The desk session exists so that fear can be practised with a wallet that holds no coins, before anyone moves a balance.

People move coins into a wallet they hold because a company can freeze a login, because a support message can be forged, or because they want a household plan that does not depend on one website. Moving is a transfer you sign. It is not a mood and not a slogan. The amount, the fee, and the destination all deserve a slow reading on the signer.

This library does not tell you to buy, sell, or leave an exchange. We teach the storage and the signing. If you want a licensed view on tax or on whether a move fits your finances, that conversation belongs with an adviser who is allowed to give it. We will help you understand what the signer will ask if you do move.

A practical order that readers here often choose: learn the paper habit, set up the signer with a practice amount only if you already understand small transfers, and only then consider a larger balance. If you want that order written for your household, ask for a briefing. If you want to rehearse it once at the window desk, reserve a private session.
