A recovery phrase belongs on paper you can hide
Why a Solana self-custody backup belongs on paper in a place the household already understands, and not in a chat thread.
A recovery phrase is the backup of a Solana wallet you hold yourself. Whoever can read those words can move the coins. That is the whole of the danger, and it is why the phrase is a storage question before it is a software question.
Chat threads, photo rolls, and email drafts feel convenient because they are already backed up. They are also copied onto other phones, other laptops, and sometimes into a family album by accident. A picture of a handwritten card is still a copy. We ask readers to treat that picture as another copy that needs a home, or to delete it after the paper original is safe.
Paper has its own failures. Fire, a flood in a ground-floor room, and a curious guest are all ordinary. Two copies in two places the household already trusts usually beat one clever hiding spot that nobody else can find when it matters. The places should be boring. A desk drawer that everyone opens is a poor choice. A container you already use for deeds or family papers is often a better one.
